Before break, I had a class with Elaine Young, who taught us all about Twitter and how important it is. Because I had mixed feelings after the lecture about the new social networking site I figured that I would just try it out. So when I had free time over break I would test it out. So I signed up and I started to follow a few people, a few people started to follow me. It a very interesting tool and can be informative but In all honesty it’s not my favorite tool to use but I do see where it comes in handy. Since I have so many things to do before the school year ends, I don’t have much time to sit around at my computer and “tweet”.
When I used Twitter, I definitely used my neocortex; I was reading people’s statuses on Twitter and writing my own. The persuasive techniques on Twitter that I found were, humor, plain folks, beautiful people, and testimonial. Many of the statuses that I read were actually very funny or giving a testimonial. Most people who I began following were plain folks, everyday people. However, many “beautiful people” like Britney Spears or Obama, use Twitter. Two general principles throughout Twitter were emotional transfer and individual meaning. Users on Twitter are able to express however they feel and through their statements. Twitter is used for many different reasons for all. The matrix for Twitter was definitely surveillance. At one point during my Twitter use, I felt like a stalker since I was able to read what everyone said and thought!

Welcome to the Web 2.0 world, Jackie!
ReplyDeleteAs a new Twitter user myself, I find your words helpful - and I look forward to more conversations.
My chief concern about Twitter is its epistemological sensibility - collapsing communication to a series of 140 character "bites."
What are Twitter's strengths, do you think?
