My Project Censored Story

Cruelty and Death in Juvenile Detention Centers.

1. Reading the story in Project Censored 2009, I learned about juvenile detention homes in our country that do not follow any standards and are not properly supervised. Many of the detention centers that are used are private and state owned facilities that utilize harmful restraint techniques and allow the living conditions to be unbearable. The US Justice Department has filed lawsuits against many facilities across the nation to help improve the detention centers and protect the children inside them.

2. The US Justice Department lacks the power to shutdown a juvenile facility. Failing to notice the conditions of juvenile facilities and delegating national standards makes it difficult to track the abuse or neglected. According to a survey, 13,000 claims of abuse in juvenile facilities were made during 2004 to 2007; the total amount of adolescents in the facilities was about 46,000 during that time. Five deaths have been determined since 2004 due to aggressive restraints.

  1. This is a most disturbing story, Jackie...

Why is the USJD unable to shut these down? Jurisdictional matter? Lack of funds or a mandate?
